Injection Therapy

Trigger Point Injections: A Brief Summary

Trigger point injections involve the administration of medication, which includes homeopathic substances and local anesthetics like lidocaine, directly into knotted muscle fibers to alleviate pain, inflammation, stiffness and discomfort. These injections are very useful for nagging issues that do not respond to traditional release methods like Acupuncture or soft tissue manipulation. This innovative technique aims to prevent, promote, maintain, and restore optimal health by harnessing the body's natural healing capabilities.

The fundamental goal of AIT is to reestablish the proper functioning of the body's autoregulating systems, which oversee vital physiological processes. These systems work within a predetermined range and continuously adapt to preserve equilibrium. The onset of disease may occur when these systems deviate from their set range. AIT strives to reinstate homeostasis by employing injections as a catalyst to reawaken autoregulation, thereby encouraging the body's innate capacity to heal and maintain a healthy balance.

How Does it Work?

Acupuncture Injection Therapy (AIT) functions by injecting small amounts of natural substances into acupuncture points, thereby activating them in a manner similar to traditional acupuncture needle insertion. The key difference, however, is that the injection provides a longer-lasting stimulation to the acupuncture point, thus intensifying the therapeutic effect. This dual approach combines the benefits of acupoint stimulation with the pharmacological properties of the injected substance, resulting in what can be considered as 'super acupuncture.'

AIT is particularly useful for treating conditions that have been unresponsive or difficult to manage through other means. Although more research is required to fully understand the mechanisms behind AIT, current studies suggest that it may work by stimulating the immune system and reawakening its innate healing abilities. These abilities include enhanced local blood circulation, tissue repair, muscle relaxation, increased metabolism, and local detoxification. Through these effects, AIT has the potential to restore balance and promote optimal functioning within the body.

What Substances are Used?

Acupuncturists primarily use vitamins, homeopathic medicines, and botanical extracts in these injections. These natural substances stimulate the acupuncture point for a longer time than traditional acupuncture which can enhance therapeutic effects. There are no steroids or cortisone injections used. Examples of some commonly used substances are:

Vitamin B12: It is involved in the functioning of the nervous system, in the formation of red blood cells, and in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins to produce energy.

Traumeel: A homeopathic anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving formula made of natural botanical extracts and minerals used for over 50 years.

Zeel: A homeopathic blend of botanical extracts and minerals used to relieve arthritic and rheumatic pain, as well as inflammation.

Lidocaine: A local anesthetic with anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

What to Expect During Your AIT Therapy Session

First, I will assess your suitability for Acupuncture Injection Therapy (AIT). The initial session may last up to an hour, while follow-up sessions may only take around 30 minutes.

Most patients experience a slight pinch during the injection, and it's possible to have some bruising, discoloration, or mild pain at the injection site the next day. Depending on your condition, injections may be administered at one or multiple points on the body.

For muscle pain treatment, the duration of therapy greatly varies depending on the individual and the severity of their condition. Many individuals notice relief within 1 to 2 sessions, while others may require additional treatments. However, you should experience changes in your condition within the first 5 sessions.

Conditions Treated with AIT

Acupuncture Injection Therapy (AIT) has proven to be particularly effective in treating various acute and chronic pain conditions throughout the body, including shoulder, back, knee, and neck pain, as well as arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, and muscle spasms. If your specific condition is not listed here and you'd like to inquire about the possibility of AIT treatment, please contact the office to discuss it with me.
